The Student Programming Council (SPC) held an open mic night on Feb. 23. This event allowed students to showcase their talents including singing, comedy, musical instruments and more.

“I really enjoyed watching open mic night. I was especially blown away by some of the piano performances and overall I thought the show was great. After open mic night, I’m interested in attending more SPC events,” Grace Mintel ‘26 said.

SPC is an organization that strives to make programs for students that are fun, memorable and special. Recently, SPC held a Mardi Gras party, open mic night and comedy show.

Publicity Chair Victoria Amador ‘23 said, “This is our second open mic night since Covid. We’ve had these events pre-covid, but our open mic night last semester was a big hit. We had a lot of people sign up to showcase their talents.”

Curtis Rodriguez ‘26 performed “All That Jazz” from “Chicago the Musical.” Rodriguez said, “I think open mic night is a great opportunity for people who like to perform to show their talents. It’s a fun night for people like me who don't have the time to commit to something like Marist Singers to show off my skills. It’s also nice for my friends who’ve never seen me perform before, hear me sing. I hope SPC starts doing more open mic nights or talent shows because it's a really fun experience.”

“The environment is so comfortable and welcoming. I love open mic night and I wish we did more because it's nice to see students so passionate about something, especially if they don’t showcase that talent otherwise,” Marketing Chair Julianna Manrique ‘23 said.

For SPC member Lina Tornese ‘26, it was great to put together this event, but she was ready to jump in herself and start performing. She sang an original song and felt very grateful for her ability to perform for her peers and share her love and passion for music.

“I love open mic night for many reasons. First of all, I love performing, and secondly, I just love being in an environment with music,” Tornese said. “Music is the universal language and it brings people together. I’m happy we can have a welcoming community allowing people to do that.”

Students who attended and performed found the atmosphere to be welcoming and exciting. Eager to perform their talents to their peers and watch what others have to share, students await the next open mic event.
