SGA Ready to Bring Campus Back to Life
The Marist College Student Government Association (SGA) has had a busy first few weeks on campus. With campus engagement at the top of the agenda, the Tsundu-Davis administration has been occupied with planning and leading events, as well as holding elections to fill remaining positions.
Student Body Vice President, Caleb Davis ’24, said he is really excited about their team around the administration, noting a mix of experience and non-experience with student government. Davis said they have been “lazar focused” on student life coming back to campus. He then highlighted creating a new position called VP of Student Well-Being, which will focus on addressing students’ health and wellness.
Title IX has been a major focus of the Tsundu-Davis administration since their campaign last spring, and Davis indicated that those plans have not changed. The SGA has been working with newly hired Title IX Coordinator Kelly Yough to address student concerns from last semester. “We are making good progress and have outlined an action plan which we hope to announce in the future.”
The SGA is currently preparing to hold elections, which Davis called “the cornerstone of our organization.” Freshmen can run to be the Class of 2025 President, Vice President, Historian, Treasurer or Secretary. In addition, any Marist student can run to be one of several Representatives who would serve as the voice for students living on or off-campus, broken up by residence area. Those elections will begin on Sunday, September 26, and go till September 28.
School spirit is something that the SGA wants to fire up, which is why they will be bringing back the Booster Club, per the association’s Instagram. The Booster Club was founded in 2009 to increase attendance at home sports events. The club will look to do the same thing as Marist re-allows fans to attend games after COVID-19 restrictions have been eased.
Davis also remarked that he and President Tsundu had gotten the chance to speak with incoming President of Marist, Kevin Weinman. Davis shared that they were both impressed with Dr. Weinman, saying, “he is ready to engage with students, and we look forward to inviting him to address the SGA General Assembly.”
With energetic leadership across the SGA, Marist can expect the Tsundu-Davis administration to try and push us out from the pandemic funk of the last 18 months and bring back a vibrant college campus.
