Saxbys Cafe: An Honest Review
Made for coffee connoisseurs, mid-day snackers and energy drink enthusiasts alike, Saxbys Cafe has been a highly anticipated addition to the plethora of Marist College Dining options.
After opening on Sept. 26, Saxbys Cafe instantly let students swarm in, offering free coffee coupons and other Saxbys swag. It was clear from the start that Saxbys wanted every Marist student to share a little piece of joy through the luscious menu they offer — well, maybe not every student.
Throughout campus, students everywhere had an opinion to share, all of which came to the same conclusion: while the coffee may be good, the wait times for Saxbys Cafe are insane.
“The wait times are probably the biggest killer, along with the pricing,” Daniel Brogen ‘26 said. “I would love to know why it's so expensive compared to everything else. When you would go to order something, [the wait times] would get to the point where you would have to do something else.”
It wasn’t just Brogen who encountered these problems either. Student-athlete Emily Litke ‘26 questioned the “weird” closing time at Saxbys.
“I have a night class at 5 p.m. and practice [before that]. I was thinking ‘Ugh, Saxbys would be nice,’ but then randomly closed,” Litke said. The most likely reason for these ‘random’ closures is the order influx that Saxbys has seen since its opening, leading to drastic wait times.
Litke went on to explain her frustration with the cafe adding, “I tried the coffee, and it seems good, but for right now, it's too difficult for me to justify when I have to plan an hour in advance if I want coffee.”
Amidst the chaos of waiting upwards of two hours for a cup of coffee or a sandwich, however, some students have been able to find loopholes around this giant issue. Sadie Cookie ‘26 explained how she “ordered the breakfast sandwich around dinner time, so the wait wasn’t great, but it was better than it is in the mornings”.
Although students have all faced the same frustrations with this new cafe on campus, everyone is still left wanting more — and thus, willing to wait for more.
Amanda Gracia ‘26 stated that Saxbys is “by far the best coffee I’ve had on campus.” She added that she has become a “big fan of the salted caramel cold brew with cold foam.”
Amidst Brogen’s frustrations, he, like Gracia, still appreciated the food itself, saying “the grilled cheese was honestly some of the better campus food.”
It’s hard to tell whether or not these massive wait times will ever go down soon. But for now, students will have to try to use the same loophole that Cooke had, and to plan when you place your orders or order breakfast for dinner. Maybe even try out the grilled cheese that Brogen liked or the coffee that is now Gracia’s go-to — but you should probably order that at 9 a.m. if you want it for lunch.
