Security Beat: Criminal Activity Ramps Up Before Spring Break
On Feb. 12, vulgar graffiti was discovered on a sitting wall directory across from the main entrance of Leo Hall. The situation was referred to Marist Security and is now considered closed.
An act of petit larceny was committed in the Upper Fulton Lot on Feb. 13 after a student reported that someone entered their vehicle without authorization. The investigation is currently pending as more information is being discovered.
On Feb. 15, security received an email from Title IX reporting an on-campus rape. The case has been closed as it was referred to Law Enforcement for further investigation.
Later that week, on Feb. 23, a student in Champagnat Hall reported receiving harassing text messages from unknown people. The case is considered closed and is being referred to Law Enforcement, as the student has notified the Town of Poughkeepsie Police.
Two more car break-ins occurred on Feb. 21 in the Lower West Cedar parking lot. Both students whose vehicles were broken into reported that nothing appeared to be missing, but their belongings were strewn about. Both students had left their car doors unlocked, and the two cases are now under pending investigation.
Security received a call reporting a gathering with underage drinking occurring on Feb.16. The Resident Director was notified of the same incident, and the case has since been closed after being referred to Marist Student Conduct.
A fake ID was discovered while taking inventory of lost and found property on Feb. 21. A forged New Jersey driver's license was also discovered near the Lower West Cedar townhouses. Both cases have been closed as the owners were referred to Marist Student Conduct.
A student stated that their black 'Abercrombie & Fitch’ hoodie was stolen from the McCormick Hall laundry room on Feb. 21. The investigation remains open as security attempts to identify the thief.
A ceramic light fixture in O’Shea Hall was found by a Resident Assistant to be intentionally broken on Feb. 25. The Resident Director was notified, and the case has been closed.
With spring break just around the corner, students are reminded to take all items of value with them when leaving for spring break. Also, with vehicle break-ins still occurring, security encourages students to lock their vehicles on campus and keep all valuables in a safe and secure location.
