SGA Winds Down for the Semester
As the semester winds down, so too does the Marist College Student Government Association, as they held one of the last meetings of the semester on Nov. 20.
There was a large amount of things to get through, including an impromptu fire drill and the charter of two new clubs. Marist Security also provided some insight into its plans for the future.
Most importantly, Marist Buildings and Grounds announced its plans for next semester, with a sidewalk being planned for the north campus entrance due to the high foot traffic. The sidewalk will be placed where many students already walk, adding a new layer of safety to the path, which is currently hazardous. Additionally, the new Marist track is slated to be finished in the summer of 2025.
On the club front, two new clubs have been announced. The Accounting Club and the Creative Perspectives Club were officially chartered, with plans to start meetings next semester.
“Let’s make accounting cool again,” said Jack Woods '26, a founding member of the club. “The Marist Accounting Club will offer education on tax and fraud topics to the entire Marist community. For those studying accounting, MAC will be the first step on your journey toward becoming a CPA, CFE or launching a successful career in the field.”
This club will represent two pre-existing larger organizations: The New York State Society of Certified Professional Accountants and the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners. This club is the first in New York State to be a student chapter of the NYCPA.
The second club is less financially focused and more sartorially specific. The Creative Perspective Club is a craft and fashion-based club designed for everyone, especially students who are not fashion majors.
"This club is all about giving people the freedom to try new things — whether it’s sewing, drawing, pattern-making or just discovering skills they never thought they’d need,” said founding president Stephanie Bendeck ‘26. “It’s not just for future designers; it’s for anyone looking to be inspired, no matter their major — STEM, history, philosophy, anything. Everyone deserves a creative outlet, and that’s what we’re here for, to give you the tools and community to unlock your creativity, find your perspective and take on life with new possibilities.”
The club will offer an education in many fields, including pattern drafting, 3D development, sewing and more. At the end of the semester, club member projects will culminate in a fashion show.
As for open SGA positions, the Associate Justice position is currently open and available. The Associate Justice will serve alongside the Chief Justice, Noah Merrow ‘25, in the SGA’s judicial branch.
“We make sure all legislation passed is constitutional and hear any cases brought to us by anyone from SGA regarding any issues with legislation, how legislation is passed, etc.," said Merrow. “We are also in charge of ensuring accountability among SGA and have oversight powers over ensuring SGA members are doing the jobs that they have been appointed to do.”
In Donnelly Hall, the security office is expanding into the space currently held by Marist card services. A primary goal of this expansion is to allow students a safe place to explain their circumstances to Security, instead of the rather cramped offices that Marist Security currently resides in. This plan will take effect over the winter break.
