Safety and Security Office Scheduled for Renovation During Winter Break

Renovations to the safety and security office are aimed for completion before the spring semester.

The Marist Office of Safety and Security is hopeful to complete renovations of its office before the spring semester commences.

The renovations are designed to make the office more customer and student-oriented, enhance business administrative matters and optimize dispatching and incident response.

“We’re not creating any new space,” said Daniel Gough, the office’s director. “It’s really a facelift, but operationally, it is a huge improvement because of how the space is being used.”

The plan is to knock down several walls in the current security office in an attempt to create a more efficient work environment. The renovation will physically separate reception and dispatch, allowing dispatchers to focus solely on call-taking and resource management, while office personnel can provide an improved customer service experience for routine safety and security administrative matters.

The renovation provides a dedicated officer workspace for shift turnovers, case report writing, training, patrol breaks and personal storage. Currently, security officers spend the majority of their time in their cars. The safety and security office has very little room for them to work.

“That tiny little area where you first walk into the office is where officers currently write all of their reports,” said Gough. “That is just something that’s not ideal.”

Due to the “facelift,” card services will be relocated to the computer lab across the hall in order to make extra space for security.

“Once construction is complete, we’ll do an open house,” said Gough. ”That would basically just be to show students our new space and how we have optimized our office.”
