One of the most influential individuals in higher education, our current president, Kevin Weinman, was honored by City & State for making equity and students the focal points of his term as president. His inspiring guidance has assisted Marist to reach new goals.

Leaders in higher education must strike a balance between free speech and academic freedom and student sensitivity in a time of growing partisanship. They must decide how to accomplish faculty and student diversity most effectively. They are questioned about whether they are using their institutions to propel economic mobility or weighing down grads with debt from student loans.

These criteria granted President Weinman to be named "The 2023 Power Education Top 100."

“I don’t see this recognition as a personal acknowledgment, but rather an institutional one. The Marist story is impressive, and we are building upon this every day, with a very bright future ahead of us,” Weinman said.

President Weinman's continued efforts to steer Marist on the right path are not surprising. He is prepared to face any task head-on with all of his energy and optimism. He has accomplished a lot in his little over a year and a half time at Marist.

“There is a deep affection for Marist and an impressive commitment to our students by our incredible faculty and staff.  As such, I can best lead by being present, listening and soaking in all this college has to offer and demonstrating my own forms of respect, appreciation and gratitude for those doing the work here. When people know a leader cares deeply about them not only as community members but as people, they are inspired to give their all and to be creative in identifying ways to make the college better,” Weinman said.

Students, faculty and other Marist community members are still incredibly enthusiastic about what he will contribute. He participates, pays attention, and radiates enthusiasm and positive energy on campus. He is constantly looking for methods to strengthen the current programs we have and to support the faculty and students.

The Presidential Fund for Equity in the Marist Experience is one of his accomplishments that he is especially pleased with. A large number of donors made contributions to this fund, and many students used it to experience activities they otherwise might not have been able to.

This fund offers support for unpaid or underpaid paid internships and classes with a travel component. Along with this, Marist has hired a large number of new, talented faculty and staff members, some of whom are now part of his leadership team and they have already had a good impact on the school and the student experience.

From this moment forward, Marist has a number of exciting plans in the works.

“We’ll be releasing a new Strategic Plan over the summer and discussing this with the community into the Fall and beyond.  In general, it will focus on continuing to improve the academic programs, instructional methods and student outcomes; make the co-curricular experience more robust and enjoyable with an emphasis on student support and wellness; and make Marist more inclusive, diverse and equitable in every way possible,” Weinman said.

The affection and support that President Weinman has for Marist College are constant. Everyone is overjoyed to have him, including the faculty and students. The Marist community will develop, change and be the subject of several innovative plans.

“All of this will continue to improve and expand Marist’s profile in New York and well beyond, including internationally, as we try to better tell the Marist story.  While it’s gratifying for this recognition from City and State, we can go so much further in the future.”
