Candidates for SGA Elections; Voting Ends Wednesday
The Marist College Student Government Association (SGA) will hold its annual elections for freshman leadership and representative positions from Oct. 17-19.
The roles on the ballot will be Class of 2026 President, Vice President and Secretary.
Ethan Solury ‘26 and Karina Syrota ‘26 are running to be the new freshmen class president.
When asked why they decided to run for class president, each candidate shared a desire to help their fellow students navigate through college, which can be confusing and intimidating for freshmen.
“I decided to run for Marist SGA because I have identified multiple issues that can be resolved and am willing to be that voice for all students,” said Solury.
While admitting that she doesn’t have all the answers as a freshman herself, Syrota said, “I love to find non-standard solutions and turn problems into challenges.”
Both candidates strive to create comradery and school spirit by organizing events and activities to engage their fellow classmates.
Syrota shared that she hopes to help people “step out of their comfort zones, work as a team, set priorities, take responsibility and have fun.”
Solury indicated a desire to build a relationship with Student Activities, allowing him to facilitate many events targeting school spirit. He also suggested creating an Instagram page for the Class of 2026, which would act as a “one-stop spot” for all the information freshmen might need.
The candidates for Class of 2026 Vice President are Dylan Bonner ‘26, Ethan Roy ‘26 and Flavia Geraci ‘26. The candidates for Class of 2026 Secretary are Jennifer McAndrew ‘26, Gavin Gilooly ‘26 and Natalie Leone ‘26.
Usually, there would be elections to fill the five different representative positions; however, this year, only one representative position is having an election. Stacey Abbeo ‘25 is running unopposed to become the Distance Representative. The remaining positions will be filled by Student Body President Gabe Borbon ‘23 and Vice President Klanell Lee ‘24.
Borbon admitted to being surprised by the lack of interest but acknowledged that the unpaid positions are a lot of work for full-time students. “We’re looking for Red Fox patriots,” said Borbon when asked about the criteria SGA will use to fill the remaining roles. “People that not only live and breath Marist, but they also look for problems to solve, work as a team and are leaders.”
Voting will begin on Monday, Oct. 17, and conclude on Wednesday, Oct.19. The results will be announced on the night of the 19th.
