Marist’s Board of Trustees Selects New President
The Marist Board of Trustees selected Kevin C. Weinman, Ph.D. as the fifth President of Marist College. Dr. Weinman will replace President Dennis J. Murray, who has been with Marist for nearly 40 years.
“Kevin Weinman is a dynamic and inspiring leader who combines the best of the liberal arts tradition and professional practice,” Ross Mauri ’80, Chair of the Board of Trustees and Chair of the Presidential Search Committee said. “He has a highly collaborative approach to governance and a truly impressive breadth of experience as a senior administrator, strategist, communicator, and scholar.”
Dr. Weinman currently serves as Chief Financial & Administrative Officer at Amherst College and will begin to serve at Marist in the fall of 2021. At Amherst College he has broad financial and administrative responsibilities, overseeing the areas of finance, investments, shared services and information technology.
“I look forward to helping guide Marist into the future and to help it’s students prepare to thrive in an ever-changing world,” Dr. Weinman said. “Now, we have a lot of work ahead of us, but from what I already see, the Marist community is ready to meet any challenge and to address every opportunity.”
Weinman was a vital partner in the development and execution of Amherst’s strategic plan and $625 million capital campaign. Prior to his position at Amherst, Weinman served as Assistant Vice President, Finance at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire.
“I believe the Board of Trustees has made an excellent decision in choosing Kevin Weinman as Marist’s next president,” President Murray said. “Kevin understands the challenges facing private higher education and has the vision, skills and experience to help the College thrive in this environment.
Helping to successfully keep the college open during the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Weinman was a part of the task force that played a critical role in Amherst’s pandemic response. In addition to work in higher education, Dr. Weinman has also presented at national conferences on the topics of risk management, strategic planning and financial modeling.
“As a student of leadership, I see in him many of the best qualities of great leaders: intellectual rigor; the ability to make personal connections and build consensus; integrity; optimism; compassion; and most importantly, good judgment,” President Murray said. “Kevin has what it takes to lead Marist to new heights.
Dr. Weinman held a number of senior roles related to finance and marketing in the corporate world. He is also a former Certified Public Accountant. He is married with two children and is a native New Yorker who grew up in northern New Jersey.
“I have long admired Marist’s academic excellence, outstanding reputation and values-based mission,” said Weinman. “I’m also drawn to its enduring commitment to the liberal arts and the “way in which its innovative curriculum prepares today’s students to meet tomorrow’s needs.”
Dr. Weinman’s appointment follows an intensive search carried out by Marist’s Presidential Search Committee. The committee consisted of a diverse group of 22 faculty and staff members, trustees and student and alumni representatives. Two student leaders served on the Presidential Search Committee, including outgoing Student Government Association (SGA) President Roda Mohamed ’21 and incoming SGA President Tenzin Tsundu ’22.
“Dr. Weinman was a strong candidate from the start, and throughout the process, he came out as extremely student-centered in his approach,” Tsundu said. “I think this approach will translate very well to Marist and will be appreciated by the student body. I'm excited to work with him next academic year and am looking forward to his integration into the Red Fox community.”
Weinman earned his Ph.D. in history from the University of New Hampshire, his M.A. in history from the University of Colorado, and his M.B.A. from the University of North Carolina’s Kenan-Flagler Business School. He received his bachelor’s degree in accounting and history from the University of Notre Dame.
“Let me also thank the many members of the Marist community who shared with us valuable feedback on the qualities we should look for in Marist’s next president,” Ross Mauri said. “I believe we have identified an extraordinary leader in Kevin Weinman, and I hope you will join me in welcoming Kevin, his wife Beth and their children Alex and Brooke to the Marist family.”
