Marist Not Allowing Overrides for Fall 2021 Semester
Decision due to current COVID classroom capacity guidelines
Marist College will not allow overrides into filled classes for the Fall 2021 Semester. This decision was confirmed by the Associate Dean of Student Academic Affairs and Registrar, Judy Ivankovic.
"Because of uncertainties about classroom capacities for Fall 2021, there are no overrides being offered at this time," Ivankovic said. "Should updated information from the Governor's office change the current guidelines, this decision will be reviewed."
Overrides allow students to enter classes that have already been filled to their listed capacity. This is helpful for students trying to take important courses for graduation requirements. Some sections only run in the fall or spring semester, meaning in some cases, overrides would be necessary to keep a student on track to graduate with their class.
"Classes are being capped with current COVID classroom capacity guidance," Ivankovic said. When asked if additional sections would be created to accommodate high demand, she shared that "some additional sections have already been created."
Marist is among many colleges across the country that have committed to an on-ground semester for Fall 2021. Meaning the majority of classes will take place in-person as opposed to online. As of now, Marist will only be offering online courses in a fully asynchronous format. These are classes that do not have live meetings or Zoom calls and are identifiable with a "700's" section number. When asked if Marist will offer any synchronous online classes in the fall, Ivankovic said, "none are planned at this time since we will be an on-the-ground campus."
It remains possible for the decision not to allow overrides to change as the beginning of the next semester gets closer. With vaccination rates increasing across the country and COVID guidelines decreasing, there is much hope that the 2021-2022 school will be a step towards normalcy on college campuses.
