Still Hope for Future Commencement Ceremony
Marist College announced plans to hold an online recognition for the graduating Class of 2020 on May 23. Due to COVID-19, Marist postponed this year’s commencement ceremony but reminded seniors that the college is still dedicated to holding a traditional ceremony when it is safe for large groups to gather.
In an email sent to seniors on Thursday, the college announced details of the online ceremony. The salute to Marist seniors will be accessible on the Marist website any time on May 23 and the following days. The college affirmed, “This is not a replacement for commencement, but rather a way to acknowledge the successful completion of your academic courses of study.”
Normally this is an exciting time for seniors, as they embark on their futures with a joyful farewell. Senior classes across the country had their years cut short and are entering unprecedented circumstances. Along with Marist, most colleges are all being forced to recognize their graduating seniors virtually. Although it is not nearly the same as a commencement ceremony, seniors are being honored not only for their academic achievements but also for their fortitude.
Nonetheless, Marist continues to plan a proper commencement ceremony for the Class of 2020.
“Marist remains committed to providing a full commencement ceremony, with all of the traditional pomp and celebration appropriate to this significant event, when we have the authority to gather and it is safe to do so.”
