Campus-wide Pause Will End Saturday
Marist College’s temporary pause will be lifted on Saturday, Oct. 17. The pause began on Oct. 9 following an off-campus gathering that violated the college’s Code of Conduct, and included a temporary lockdown of the Fulton townhouses. Since the initial cases started to surface, the college administered over 1,200 COVID-19 tests over five days.
Beginning on Oct. 17, on-campus classes, outdoor athletic training sessions and official in-person activities can resume, according to an email update from Executive Vice President Geoff Brackett, Vice President for Academic Affairs Thom Wermuth and Vice President for Student Affairs Deborah DiCaprio. The McCann Center will be reopened in phases in the upcoming days. The administrators reminded students that local travel is permitted, the campus is closed to visitors outside of specially approved guests and interactions should be restricted to roommates and housemates.
The announcement also indicated the students whose off-campus party initiated the increase in cases would face disciplinary action and reminded the community of the (845) 575-MASK hotline for reporting violations. It also expressed the administration’s pride in the community’s response to the pause.
“We’re extremely grateful to the staff members who have gone above and beyond their ordinary responsibilities to keep the campus open and safe. We also applaud our faculty who, despite challenging conditions, have demonstrated their dedication to teaching our students,” the announcement included. “Perhaps above all, we are most proud of our students, who have responded to the challenges of this ever-changing environment by adopting the appropriate health protocols and joining together to enable us to continue the semester.”
