Whether you’re a first-time freshman or a graduating senior, college is always full of new experiences. From classes and clubs to family and friends, there’s a lot to navigate; however, at Marist College, one of the best features to explore is the surrounding area – the Hudson Valley.

While you don’t want to leave Poughkeepsie without walking over the river or checking out the FDR Presidential Library, you might be surprised by some of Dutchess County’s hidden gems that are outside the "Marist bubble."

Books are great, but they’re even better when they can be found at a discount. The Poughkeepsie Public Library District’s Friends’ Book Store is full of used and donated books in every genre you could imagine, most of which can be found at prices of $2 or less. Your purchases will help fund the library district’s programs, including the bookmobile, author visits and summer reading.

Hyde Park

Thrifting and Gen Z are already such a flawless pair. But maybe our generation can also claim antiquing — after all, the Hyde Park Antiques Center is just down the road from Marist. This over 9,500 square foot facility is a treasure trove of vintage items, from kitchenware and jewelry to household items and art. If you’re searching for unique gifts, you’ve come to the right place.

Ferncliff Forest

Rhinebeck

Just outside the hustle and bustle of downtown Rhinebeck lies Ferncliff Forest, which is touted as the region’s “second-best old growth forest.” The star attraction is the fire tower – standing at 80 feet tall, those brave enough can climb 109 steps to the top for breathtaking views of the surrounding area.
