Leave Your Comfort Zone At These September Events

Pop the Marist bubble by checking out these local Hudson Valley happenings.

It’s easy to limit your scope of events to those within the Marist College bubble, even with the historic and charming, yet novel, City of Poughkeepsie nearby. Despite this, there are several events either an Uber or train ride away from Marist — so, connect with the region that’s your second home at these local events.

The Poughkeepsie Waterfront Market, every Tuesday from 2 - 5:30 p.m. on the Mid-Hudson Discovery Museum’s Pavilion

Every Tuesday until Oct. 29, the Waterfront Market is a fantastic excuse to get closer to the Hudson Valley community, with locally-produced food fresher than anything available at ShopRite. More of an upperclassmen event — because of their access to dormitory kitchens — the Market can break the monotony of grocery shopping with an afternoon of community-filled fun and fresh produce galore. More information is available on the Mid-Hudson Discovery Museum website.

“Angels, Outlaws, Sinners and Saints,” Free Exhibit, Saturday, Sept. 7 from 5 - 7 p.m., open through Sept. 30 at Gallery 40, 40 Cannon St. (to the left of King’s Court Brewing Company)

Sean Bowen and Lisa Winika are important figures in the Hudson Valley art scene; the two are collaborating on an exhibit that explores humanity’s vices and virtues, evoking both the divine and the “allure of the forbidden.” The provocative and introspective gallery is happening in the gorgeous Gallery 40 building on 40 Cannon Street in the center of Poughkeepsie. Read more about it on the Gallery 40 website.

The Nighttimes Release Party, Friday, Sept. 13 from 8 - 11 p.m. at The Workshop @ Industrial Arts Brewing Company in Beacon, New York (a $5 train ride from Poughkeepsie)

Five veterans of the Brooklyn rock scene are bringing a heavier version of the guitar-centric, early-2000s post-punk-revival — akin to the likes of The Killers, Franz Ferdinand and Jack White — to a gutted-warehouse-turned-brewery on 511 Fishkill Avenue in Beacon. The band is performing live to celebrate the release of two new singles; if you’re looking for a night of heavy rock and good IPAs a train ride away from Poughkeepsie, this is the show to be at.

Vic Dibitetto Stand-Up Comedy Show (18+), $38.80, Friday, Sept. 13 & Saturday, Sept. 14, with Shows at 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. at Laugh it Up! Comedy Club inside Mahoney’s

If you haven’t seen his “Ticked Off Vic” YouTube series, I suggest you pick a video and enjoy the raunchy, rage-filled, yet relatable act that Vic Dibitetto has developed. Shouty humor dealing with topics affecting the average American, Vic is a fiery act that will, no doubt, entertain. He has four shows spanning two nights at Laugh it Up! on 35 Main Street, next to the train station. Tickets can be bought on TicketWeb's website.
Louis Katz Stand-Up Comedy Show (18+), $27.75, Wednesday, Sept. 28 at 7 p.m., Laugh it Up! Comedy Club inside Mahoney’s
Dirty, but wickedly smart. As a joke writer featured on NBC, HBO and Comedy Central, Katz’s pen is quick and refined, with proof available through his comedy special "PRESENT/TENSE." You can expect lowbrow sex and race jokes presented by a comedian smarter than the topics he covers, resulting in rapid-fire jokes resonating with over a million viewers on his most recent YouTube special. Tickets are available on TicketWeb's website.
