Style That Spans Cities

Even if you don’t personally know her, you have probably seen Sophia Reynoso ‘25 walking around campus. She is easily spotted with her long, bright red hair, platform shoes and flowing skirts, which she claimed her friends remark as a signature aspect of her style.

Reynoso’s stylistic influences vary, but she said living in Florida has shaped how she dresses.

“I don't think my style can be categorized in one box, but having grown up in south Florida, where people don’t have a very defined personal style, I had to come up with something that conforms, but could also be my kind of edgy.”

The result was a blend of styles that Reynoso described as, “a combination of mermaids and media like Twin Peaks.” This usually involves a darker color palette, often all black or neutrals, paired with softer silhouettes.

The mix of more grunge ‘90s elements with the flowy mermaid aesthetics perfectly encapsulates Reynosos’s look as well as the mixture of her external environments.

Reynoso said that in New York, especially in the city, she noticed, “People have an idea of what style should be, whereas in Florida, it’s hot so people dress a lot lighter and have less of a distinct style.”

Reynoso added, “In Florida there is more emphasis on sex appeal, so a lot more skin showing.”

However, she does not have a preference for either. “When I’m in Florida, New York feels a million miles away. And when I’m here, Florida feels far away. I make do with where I am at the time,” said Reynoso.

The appreciation for both atmospheres certainly creates a positive attitude towards style, a non-judgmental nature that allows Reynoso to experiment with different elements.

Jess Prendaj ‘25, a friend of Reynoso’s, recently visited her in Miami over spring break. “Usually you see her in really gray scenery in Poughkeepsie, but it was just crazy to see her in Miami because she’s wearing the same thing, but there’s palm trees and sun behind her,” said Prendaj.

However, Reynoso takes what would seemingly be a contradiction and makes it seem natural.

In regards to her hair, Reynoso explained, “Growing up, Ariel was my favorite Disney princess. Any time I went to Disney I had to go to Ariel’s grotto. I always wanted her red hair and didn’t get it as vibrant as I wanted until college.”

Her hair is the perfect eternal accessory for her outfits. It echoes her bright and fun personality, shining amongst the more monochromatic elements of her outfits, while simultaneously evoking her love for mermaids and encapsulating her edgy style. It’s the perfect amalgamation of who she is.
