Bet She Made You Look
A few months ago, singer-songwriter Meghan Trainor released the hit song “Made You Look” which reintroduced her name to the world, instantly becoming her first Hot 100 hit after four years due to its rise to fame on TikTok. Social media users played the song as a way to spread body positivity and decrease the sexualization of women, a theme that Trainor employs in her influential track.
Since her debut in 2009, Trainor has continued to make songs that stand out and make a statement, with her latest focused on promoting a healthy body image. “Made You Look” was written after Trainor’s C-section delivery of her son, Riley, as she sought to remind herself and the world that she is still sexy regardless of her scars.
In creating this song, Trainor worked to lessen her body image issues and build a positive view of her body. In an interview with “Rolling Stone,” Trainor said, “I've never had a scar, so seeing all these new marks on me, like literally, I had PTSD after having a C-section because you have to be awake.”
It’s because of her postpartum body that she felt drawn and inspired to create this new song. Her therapist recommended that she stand in front of a mirror every day naked. By doing this she would look at herself for five minutes, which helped her realize that she is beautiful no matter what, inspiring the lyrics “But even with nothin’ on / Bet I made you look.”
To properly deliver this song with the Meghan Trainor flair that we all remember from her first hit, “All About that Bass” in 2014, Trainor opted for a splash of bright colors in the music video. Additionally, she included a variety of pop icons like Jojo Siwa, Scott Hoying, Chris Olsen and her husband Daryl Sabara.
Like most of her music videos, Trainor’s song was a hit, garnering over 100 million views since its release in October. With 10 years since her first-ever album drop, Trainor has never ceased to lose the attention of her fans throughout her career.
Her album released on Oct. 21, titled “Takin’ It Back,” works to reclaim her name and reinvent Trainor in a new light, as a pop star and a mom. In an interview with “People,” Trainor said, “I just feel like my music is elevated and my music videos are also elevated."
After four years of waiting for a new album, it’s safe to say that fans are pleased with “Made You Look” and they can’t wait to see what’s next. Until then, remember that every body is a beautiful body, and no matter what, each of us can say, “Bet I Made You Look.”
