Students React to Kardashian and Barker Engagement

Travis Barker, the Blink-182 drummer, proposed to reality TV star Kourtney Kardashian on Oct. 17 in Montecito, California surrounded by roses and candles.

Kiera Cameron ‘24 said a friend of a friend’s mother witnessed the engagement and sent her pictures as it happened live, giving her the inside scoop just 30 minutes before it blew up on social media.

Barker worked alongside jeweler Lorraine Schwartz to design the ring that is estimated to be worth about $1 million. 

Their engagement has nearly broken the internet with countless articles, posts and comments on the matter. Some have even formulated conspiracy theories regarding the engagement. 

Eliana Assaf ‘23 said she’s heard her fair share of rumors from Tik Tok. From the two being engaged before the public moment to Kris Jenner orchestrating it, she feels there could be some truth behind them.

This generation grew up with reality TV and “Keeping Up With the Kardashians”, making many people feel attached. 

“You see Kourtney and Travis everywhere so you have to be invested in it,” said Cameron.

Barker, 45 years-old, and Kardashian, 42 years-old, have been friends for years, but exclusively dating for under a year. However, Morgan Franz ‘23 said, as a big fan of “Keeping Up With the Kardashians”, she has seen her character develop from this relationship and has high hopes for them. 

“I have a feeling they’ll last. I really like this relationship for her,” said Franz. “I feel like if you know who the right one is, time doesn’t really matter.”

Meanwhile, Cameron isn’t so sure. “That’s such a Kardashian nature to just be like, ‘Oh this is love’ and rush into it.”

Whether this relationship will last the test of time or repeat sister Kim Kardashian’s brief 72 day marriage is unclear. But, many believe this wedding will be quite an extravagant event as it is Kourtney’s first. Fans look forward to watching the proposal and wedding on the Kardashian’s show that is currently being filmed for the online streaming service, Hulu. 

“I think the wedding is going to be unreal because this is her first marriage so I’m really excited,” said Franz.
