MPorium teamed up with Measure Magazine, Marist University’s fashion publication, to host a DIY Record Decorating Event on April 2. Students were invited to decorate and design their own vinyl records as well as create miniature scrapbooks.
The event celebrated MPorium’s theme for the Spring 2025 semester: 84.5 Classic Rewind. A clever take on Poughkeepsie’s area code, the collection highlights the evolution of music from the 1970s to the early 2000s, with a special emphasis on the city’s music scene.
“It’s been super fun and has given [us] a lot of flexibility to keep it interactive and ensure that the customers get a little bit of every genre and every era of music here in the 845,” said Diana Finchum ‘25, MPorium’s events and community outreach student director.
Naturally tying in with the theme, the DIY Record Decorating Event celebrated music while providing a fun, collaborative activity for students.
“I liked the craft that they had and the collab they did. I had so much fun catching up with friends while making some new decor,” said Marina DeNezza ‘27.
To honor local Poughkeepsie music, MPorium is showcasing several photos from the university archive at their boutique in Steel Plant. These images depict local bands and other on-campus music groups from over the years. Additionally, they plan to invite local artists and DJs to their upcoming fashion fest.
As their first interactive event of the semester, record decorating is one of many opportunities MPorium has planned for the rest of the year. They have another collaboration with Fashion Inc., a fashion club on campus open to students of all majors. On April 23, MPorium will host their annual fashion fest, which usually takes place on the Marist green, where students can purchase items from local and student-run vendors.
MPorium plans to release a few new items before the semester ends, including their much-anticipated senior drop, which showcases original designs from graduating seniors.
“I can’t give too much away, but I would definitely recommend staying tuned,” shared Finchum.
MPorium is one of three experiential classes offered within Marist’s fashion program, alongside Measure Magazine and Silver Needle Runway.
“We work very closely together to ensure that we’re keeping the synergy alive, celebrating all of the students involved and all of Marist in general,” said Finchum.
Open to sophomores, juniors and seniors of all majors, the class provides students with valuable hands-on experience. “It’s really beneficial for a lot of us students who have both fashion and business backgrounds,” Finchum added.
Measure Magazine is created through the Magazine Production class offered through Marist's fashion program. From blogs, profiles and how-tos, to even a podcast series titled Measure Unmuted, Measure Magazine is a creative outlet for fashion students to catalog and experiment with the latest fashion trends. Their next issue will be published at the end of the semester and will be sold through MPorium.
